The band "America" unites Pres. Aquino and Former Chief Justice Corona

TAMED AUDIENCE.  America, the 42-year-old folk rock group, performed Wednesday night at the jam-packed Smart Araneta Coliseum. Their finale, “A Horse With No Name,” was among the most applauded numbers though crowd could have loosened up a bit, stood up to dance and sing with the band. Video by Totel V. de Jesus/INQUIRER.net
MANILA, Philippines—For more than two cheerful hours on Wednesday night, President Benigno Aquino III and a few of his Cabinet members were one with impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona and wife Cristina.
They were all sighted at the Smart Araneta Coliseum one-night-only concert of veteran American folk rock group named, well, America.
Why they’re there is pretty obvious.
The 64-year-old former chief magistrate was in his early 20s when America conquered the international music scene in the first quarter of the 1970s, about the same time the young Aquino was about to enter his teenage years.
The 52-year-old bachelor President was seen without a date though he was comfortably seated at the lower box with Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares while the Corona couple were at the 4th row middle part near the stage.
America had the Hawaiian soft rock group Kalapana as front act, who performed about seven songs. Naturally the most applauded of Kalapana’s very short set were “Night Bird” and their major hit, “The Hurt”.
The 42-year-old America, composed of original members Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, started their set with, curiously, two major hits they released nearly a decade apart, “Tin Man” (early 1970s) and “You Can Do Magic” (1982).
The momentum could have been maintained but they followed them up with a lesser hit, “Don’t Cross The River.”
“We’re happy to be back here again in the Philippines. We’ve been performing here for decades,” Beckley blurted out somewhere in the middle of their first five songs.
He said they’ve been everywhere, from Ecuador to the Great Wall of China. Just to give the audience an idea how they continue to love what they’re doing, Beckly said, “We formed the band when we were in our teens, just fresh from high school in the early ‘70s. Now after 42 years we’re still around, doing 100 shows every year, all over the world.”
Without a break, they enthralled the audience with more hits that Filipinos from Babuyan Channel to Sabah Islands like to drunkenly sing in street-corner videoke bars; “Ventura Highway,” “Inspector Mills,” “Sandman,” “Sister Golden Hair’” “Lonely People” and “I Need You.”

They also did a cover of the 1960s folk rock hit “California Dreamin’” from the Mamas & The Papas, Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” and the 1990s soft-grunge ballad, Gin Blossoms’ “Till I Hear It From You.”
The songs are included in their latest album, “Backpages,” released middle of 2011. The album also has their version of Bob Dylan’s “My Back Pages,” New Radicals’ “Someday We’ll Know,” and Simon and Garfunkel’s, uh, “America”, among others.
“These are some of the songs we wish we could have written,” Bunnell explained.
America did about nearly 20 songs, including their double-barrelled encore “All My Life” and “A Horse With No Name,” to which the crowd sang in unison.
Despite the applause and the videoke-like accompaniment with the popular titles, there were only a handful of fans who were brave, or better yet, energetic enough to stand up, sing and dance. Many were just contented clapping and singing in their seats, as if they were watching a late Sunday night TV special.
But America gave all they got and Corona was seen nodding repeatedly to almost all of their songs.
Catch America with Kalapana on October 19 at the Waterfront Cebu Hotel and on October 21 at the University of Baguio.

Jonas Brothers will have a concert at the Big Dome on October 19

MANILA, Philippines—The American boy band Jonas Brothers will perform on October 19 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Composed of real-life brothers Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas, the group was launched in 2005.
A debut album, “It’s About Time,” was released the following year.
Three more albums came out in succession: “Jonas Brothers” (2007); “A Little Bit Longer” (2008) and “Lines, Vines and Trying Times” (2009).
The group has sold more than eight million albums worldwide.
The brothers have also branched out into acting, appearing in the Disney Channel TV series “Hannah Montana,” the Disney TV movie “Camp Rock” and “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam,” and the 20th Century Fox film “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.”

Jonas Brothers, J.Lo, The Fray Concert in Manila

MANILA, Philippines -- The last quarter of the year will see five popular international acts stage separate concerts in Manila. Among them are boy band Jonas Brothers and former "American Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez.
Following his first visit to Manila in May for a clothing brand endorsement, Joe Jonas will be joined by the other two thirds of the popular Disney-grown musical act, Kevin and Nick, to his second visit to the country.
The American boy band's Manila concert will see the real-life brothers' reunion as an act after a three-year absence from the music scene. According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the Jonas Brothers will perform on October 19 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
J.Lo in Manila
After expressing her excitement over a possible visit to Manila in May, Latin singer Jennifer Lopez will finally set foot in the Philippines for the first time for a one-night concert.
The Philippine Star reported that the former "Idol" judge, also known as J.Lo, has been confirmed to stage the Manila stop of her "J.Lo Dance Again World Tour" at the SM Mall Of Asia Arena on November 26.
Rock bands, Morrison
Also confirmed to visit Manila in the last quarter of the year are rock bands The Fray, Creed, and English singer-songwriter James Morrison.
Morrison will perform at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on October 9 as part of his world tour titled "The Awakening." He is known for the hits "You Give Me Something" and "Broken Strings."
The Fray will perform live at the same venue on November 10, while Creed will hold a show the night after.
Creed, an American rock band, is known for the hits "My Sacrifice" and "With Arms Wide Open," while The Fray is behind the songs "How to Save a Life" and "You Found Me."
Cinderella, Buzz Lightyear
The Big Dome will also serve as the venue where Disney characters Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will "scout" for new talents among its kiddie audience.
In "Disney's Live! Mickey's Rockin Road Show," children will "[discover] friends like Tigger and the 'Toy Story' cast and Cinderella, and the second part they will come together and perform," according to Kerry Silson, who plays the character of Buzz Lightyear.
Billed as a "fun-filled road trip" that doubles as a talent search, "Rockin Road Show" will run from September 5 to 15 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Maroon 5 Live in Manila

MANILA, Philippines—Great music will once again grace Manila grounds as Maroon 5 brings their “Overexposed Tour” with special guest, The Cab on September 18 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Tickets will be available on June 25. Tickets may be purchased online at www.ticketnet.com.ph or call Ticketnet hotline 911-5555 for inquiries.

Expect today’s hottest band composed of Adam Levine on vocals, James Valentines on guitar, Mickey Madden on bass, Matt Flynn on drums, PJ Morton on keyboards,  to knock everybody off their feet with a scorching performance together with The Cab, who recently gave an amazing show here in Manila last March with other great bands in a mini music festival called Smash Project 2012.

With millions of album sold worldwide, numerous chart topping hits, it’s not a surprise that Maroon 5 has now reached international prominence and recognition. Gone were the days where the band was just trying to fill small LA clubs. Now it’s arenas and stadiums at thousands strong. Yes, the band is now a worldwide sensation but has still managed to keep their feet on the ground and acknowledge, with humor, the fact that they are overexposed.

“Overexposed”, the title of Maroon 5’s latest album was an inside joke, a pre-emptive approach to what was inevitably going to be said of the band. With front man Adam Levine’s venture into TV, as a mentor for the hit reality show The Voice, Maroon 5 has reached that stage where their popularity has become increasingly hard to deny.

“It’s like, ‘We get it—we’re overexposed,’” Levine says with a laugh. “We’re just trying to preemptively go where the conversation is headed anyway. We figured we’d get there first.”

Their latest phenomenal hit “Moves Like Jagger”, a song that went down in history as one the most paid downloaded songs, prompted the band to explore the idea of co-writing. The underlying message of their new album title captures the band’s willingness to take a step further in terms of music and took risks.

“I feel like we’ve been standing on the edge of a cliff for a long time,” Levine says. “We’re a band that’s always been close to being full-on pop, but that’s rooted in a lot of other things: rock, soul, funk, the list goes on. Overexposed is the first time we’ve ever completely embraced the idea of making pop music—of making songs for the radio. We just said, ‘Let’s not be afraid to do what we basically are.’”

Maroon 5’s fourth album is the result of that. Levine says that of all the band’s albums, “Overexposed” feels “both most and least like Maroon 5. There are lots of traces of the past, but it also hints at a new idea,” the singer explains. “More than anything I think this record says that it’s always cool to try—that you should always be willing to take a step beyond whatever feels comfortable.”

The album features collaboration with well-known producers—Max Martin (the album’s executive producer), Benny Blanco and Ryan Tedder. Their single off their new album, “Payphone” – the incredibly catchy and sweet as pop song, features rapper Wiz Khalifa for the guest verse. Indeed they are heading over to the “pop” direction with heads held up high.

“I love how ‘Payphone’ seems like a such sweet song until the chorus comes in,” Levine says, referring to the part of that tune where he declares, “All those fairy tales are full of shit / One more fucking love song, I’ll be sick.” “It’s totally subverting the song in this way that makes you lean in and listen,” he says.

The creation of their new album also brought about changes individually for the band members.
“There’s a new focus that’s set into us both personally and as a band,” Valentine said.

“We had such amazing experiences the first 10 years of this group, and I think we spent a lot of time enjoying it, which was great. But now it’s like, ‘Well, what do we do? We make records.’” The guitarist laughs. “Put it this way: In 2007 after the show we were definitely finding out where the party was. Now it’s more like, ‘Hey, let’s go finish that song.’ That’s what’s more exciting to us.”

Whether it’s a new approach to song writing or the band’s headed over to a new direction, there is still one thing that remains true: Maroon 5 continuously creates great music. This fact is undeniable. And with fans awaiting their return, Maroon 5 “Overexposed Tour” would be an affirmation of the fact the people all over will always and continuously support the great music that the band makes.

Great music is wonderful but it would be doubly incredible if it were heard live. Maroon 5 live in Manila happens on September 18 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. This event is presented by Midas Promotions in cooperation with Dayly Entertainment.  Also presented by Head and Shoulders, Sulit.com.ph, Tanduay Ice with co-presenters Dickies and PLDT My Dsl.
