Mon Tulfo wanted to get his gun

MANILA, Philippines – Journalist Mon Tulfo admitted his first instinct when actor Raymart Santiago hit him during the brawl that happened last Sunday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) was really to get his gun.

“Ang instinct ko ay tumakbo papunta kung nasaan ang baril ko. Kukunin ko ang baril ko and that would have been very nasty,” Tulfo told Boy Abunda in an exclusive interview with “The Buzz” aired on Sunday.
Tulfo said though it was unfortunate that his gun was still at the counter.
“Hindi ko pa nari-receive sa counter. Nasa loob pa ako ng terminal building... Naisip ko lang sa sarili ko, ‘Naku kung mangyayari ito, patay si Mon Tulfo.’ Pero ang number one instinct ko noon, takbuhin ko ang baril ko at balikan sila roon. Wala nang makakapigil sa akin. Maraming masasawi,” he added.
Tulfo said he decided to just stand his ground and duke it out with Santiago and his friends than for people to think he’s a coward.
“Ang ginawa ko sana nung nakita kong marami na sila, tumakbo na ako na parang duwag. Kasi akala ko sa sarili ko at that time, kapag tumakbo ako ano na lang ang sasabihin ng mga tao sa akin? Hindi ako tumakbo. I stood my ground. Nagkamali ako dahil ang dami nila,” he said.
Tulfo insisted he never intended to shove or kick Santiago’s wife, actress Claudine Barretto.
“No, no [hindi ko tinulak si Claudine]. Malayo siya. Minsan nakakaganti ako, nakakatulak ako... 'Yung sinasabing nasipa ko siya, maaaring noong nakalugmok na ako, sumisipa na ako dahil iyon ang ginawa kong panangga kasi nakita sa video nga na tumba na ako, pinagtutulungan na ako, tumba na ako, ” he said.
Tulfo also appealed to the person who recorded the video of the brawl to come out so he can personally thank him.
“Hanggang ngayon kung maari sana makipagkita ka sa akin even in secret para mapasalamatan ko at mayakap lang kita. Kung hindi sa video na iyon, wala na ako ngayon. Lugmok na ako sa public opinion,” he said.

Mother's Day Special:"Featuring Caridad Tulfo & how she brought up Tulfo brothers"

Behind every man’s success is a mother with a badass whip.
They may be in-your-face, tough-talking journalists, feared, loved and hated by many, but this pack of warrior-brothers heel only to one voice—their mother’s.
Yes, the Tulfo brothers have a mother. And she’s not quite what you expect the mom of high-profile media persons Ramon “Mon” Jr., Erwin, Raffy and Ben might be.
Soft-spoken, courteous and polite, Caridad Tulfo, 87, is very old-school. As the disciplinarian of the Tulfo household, she believes that sparing the rod will spoil the child. When you’re raising boys born two years apart each other, you’ll either lose it from sheer exhaustion or toughen up and treat them like men.
“Every week, I would call my children for a two-hour lecture on honesty, obedience. I needed to instill in them the values of life,” Caridad said in Tagalog. Disobedience was not tolerated in their house. She could not afford to, not with 10 children.
Mon, she recalled, was always trying to outwit her. When Mon needed to be punished for being a bad boy—and he often was a naughty boy, Caridad said—he would put a piece of cardboard inside his pants to protect his legs from his mother’s wrath.
“Did my mom tell you how many times I had to be spanked for discipline in a day [when I was a little boy]? Three times,” Mon said, laughing. Sometimes, he continued, she would even have the help spank him instead of her.
“But I would always know because it sounded different. He’s immune to pain,” Caridad said, laughing along.
Misbehaving children were first punished by Caridad, who is a full-time mother. If their dad, Col. Ramon Sr., was around, he would be informed of the misdeeds and the kids would get another punishment from him. Ramon Sr., as a military man, was often away from home, though, leaving the reins in the able hands of Caridad.
“Double yung punishment if Dad were around. But I never resented those. I never do that to my kids, but that’s the old-style discipline. If not for my mom’s discipline, I would be in Muntinlupa now, in the national penitentiary,” Mon said.
Raffy, 52, the eighth of the Tulfo children, recalls his mother’s daily prayer: “I still remember my mother’s prayer. She’d say, ‘Lord, Raffy or Erwin will grow up criminals, please take them away from me now. I offer their lives to You.’“Raffy then couldn’t sleep because he thought he might die if he fell asleep,” said Mon, laughing. But if their mom was a strict disciplinarian when they were little, their grandmother, Caridad’s mom, was even more rigid. “May palo na, kakagatin ka pa,” Mon recalled.
Trials and heartaches
Caridad has been through a lot. She was a prisoner of war during World War II (she’s half-Japanese), and she single-handedly raised 10 children—seven of them boys. This 5’5” lady has certainly borne many trials and heartaches in life.
What got her through tough times, she said, was prayers. In fact, it has all been about prayers. Raffy has a pocketful of prayers—literally. Stampitas for all sorts of protection are tucked neatly in the sleeves of his wallet. His car and home, he said, are also lined with saints gifted by his mom.“I believe we are where we are in our careers mainly because of her prayers. Her prayers are not for herself but for us. She’d request nuns and priests to pray for us. As if the prayer room is not enough, she still goes to church a number of times each week,” Raffy said.
Caridad’s father was a Japanese businessman. They owned a store, she said, and were quite well-off compared to her classmates. In grade school, she used to pilfer school supplies like pencils and pad papers, even slippers, from the store and give those to her less fortunate classmates. If the household help saw her taking out stuff, she would bribe them with P5 so they wouldn’t tell on her parents. It always worked, she said, laughing.
Raffy, who Caridad said took after her in terms of generosity, calls his mom the Robin Hood of her time. Except that this Robin Hood didn’t take from everyone; she took stuff that belonged to her family.Caridad’s father was also very generous, she said, donating often to charities and helping their employees whenever they were in tight financial situations. The opposite could be said of her mom, she said. Her parents differed so much in this part of their lives that when her dad passed away, Caridad heard their tenants say they wished it was her mom who had passed on.
“God always answers my prayers. Even during the war, I prayed no one would discover I was part-Japanese. I would put mud on my face and body and pray nobody that would find out because men were killing and raping women. It was war. Then He gave me 10 children. I thought I couldn’t handle it, but with His help I did,” she said.
Prayer room
She goes to the prayer room when she feels lonely—she lives on her own with one help; when she wants to be alone with her thoughts; when she misses her children; when she’s sad and crying; when she wakes up from a bad dream about her children, usually involving her sons.
The prayer room is where she runs to when she has problems. And right now she has a lot on her plate.
On May 6, Mon Tulfo figured in a brawl at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport with movie stars Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barretto. The next day, on “T3,” the TV show hosted by Ben, Raffy and Erwin, the brothers made threats on national television against the couple (they have since issued an apology and are currently under suspension).
“I told them hindi ko nagustuhan ‘yun,” Caridad said. “Dahan-dahan lang. I’m sad about the controversy. It’s all in the will of God now what’s going to happen to them next. Sinabi ko na, Lord, thy will be done. Kung pwede extend mo pa [buhay nila] pero kung gusto mo na silang kunin, i-surrender ko na sila sa’yo. Ikaw ang may hawak sa buhay nila.”
Like most Filipinos, Caridad and the three brothers learned about the brawl in the news. It was not like Mon to tell anyone he had a problem. Mon said it never even crossed his mind to tell anyone.
“I nearly passed out. That was the worst I’ve ever been. The worst was the bruised ego. Everything I learned in martial arts came to nothing in that incident,” said Mon.
Will of God
Caridad said she never wanted her sons to be journalists because she knew the profession involved risks. They would have enemies, she said. Instead, she wanted them to become priests—all, save for Mon, she said, because she knew he would not finish the course if she forced him to.
“I have a prayer for journalists. I say it every day. I was happy when Erwin issued an apology. If the Santiagos won’t accept them, then that’s still the will of God. Maybe He wants to test my children,” Caridad said.
Raffy said that when her mom says something, like you’ll get bad karma for this or you’ll be generously rewarded for that, it usually comes true. That’s why when she reminds him he hasn’t been calling or visiting her lately, that it’s important not to take their mom for granted if they want blessings to come into their lives, he’d come rushing back to her side.
“Nagtatampo lang ako. I don’t talk to them, so they come rushing here right away and give me gifts, like cakes, which I can’t eat anyway because my sugar is high,” she said, laughing.
“She’s the greatest mom on earth as far as I’m concerned,” said Raffy. “She’s very thoughtful and lovable. She calls us whenever she thinks medyo napapariwara kami sa mga sinasabi namin sa radyo or TV. She gives us advice, and more often than not I listen.”

TV5 asks Court of Appeals to stop MTRCB suspension to Tulfo brothers

MANILA, Philippines—Describing  the 20-day suspension imposed by the censors board on its public affairs program “T3: Kapatid, Sagot Kita” as beyond the mandate of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) and a threat to the “independence and freedom of the broadcast industry,” TV5 on Friday asked the Court of Appeals to stop the enforcement of the board’s decision.
“This [decision] oversteps the mandate of the MTRCB and sets it on a path that could threaten the independence and freedom of the broadcast industry,” TV5 spokesperson, lawyer Jay Tolosa said of the preventive suspension slapped on “T3” after its hosts, Raffy, Erwin and Ben Tulfo, aired threats of physical harm on celebrity couple Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barretto.
The Tulfo brothers issued the threats after watching a video aired on Monday that showed the Santiago couple and their friends ganging up on their eldest brother, Inquirer columnist Ramon Tulfo, after an altercation on Sunday morning at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 turned violent.
The MTRCB spokesperson, lawyer Eugenio Villareal, said the board could not comment on Tolosa’s action, as it had “not received any order from any court nor copy of any pleading from TV5.”
He said that the board is standing by the status quo and its preventive suspension order while the case remains pending.  “One of the reasons it is pending is that on Monday, TV5 will be submitting evidence of its public apology and of the alleged three-day suspension order it gave to the ‘T3’ hosts.”
Villareal said that the board was “at a loss” about TV5’s questioning of its jurisdiction “since [from] the beginning, ‘T3’ has been submitting itself for review as a public affairs program, which is not the same as a straight-news program … exempt under PD 1986.  Under our implementing rules and regulations, straight and objective news reporting is distinguished from news analyses, commentaries and opinions which may be subjective in nature.”
But MTRCB chair Grace Poe-Llamanzares on Friday told the Inquirer in a phone interview that the censors board was well within its authority when it suspended the TV program.
Not straight news
“I think it’s rather clear that the MTRCB has jurisdiction over all publicly exhibited materials on television as long as it’s not straight news. It’s the only exemption—not public affairs or news magazine programs,” Llamanzares said, reacting to the statement by TV5 president and CEO Ray Espinosa aired on Thursday claiming that the board’s actions were illegal and had violated press freedom.
“It was a huge mistake on their part,” Espinosa said in Filipino. “[‘T3’] is not an entertainment show, but a news program. The MTRCB has no authority to suppress news and public service,” he said.
But Llamanzares pointed out that when “T3” applied for a broadcast permit, the station itself “categorized it as a public affairs program.”
She explained that strictly speaking, “straight news” is defined by the MTRCB as “unscripted news reels without commentaries, analyses or opinions.”
“In ‘T3’s’ case, the hosts used the program to air their personal grievances,” Llamanzares said. “It’s not for the benefit of the public.”
The MTRCB chief said that the May 7 episode was only the latest of “T3’s” many violations. “We’ve received numerous complaints against the program, and in fact, we’ve called them for a conference. They made pronouncements and promises before [to correct their mistakes], and then this incident happened.”
Llamanzares added:  “There really is a basis for a preventive suspension because something might happen again, especially if there’s a rise again in the emotions of the hosts regarding what happened [at the airport].”
As for Espinosa’s comment that the board had violated press freedom, the MTRCB chair said that while all people have the right to free speech, she believes that media broadcasters should not use their position or programs to uphold their personal interests or grievances, or incite violence.
“Perhaps they can do it to a certain extent, but at the very least, they’re not supposed to threaten people,” she said, adding that the censors board’s “greater responsibility is to the viewers of society.”
According to Tolosa, the suspension “raises the question of what else, other than the disciplining of the anchors, the government aims to achieve.”
The TV5 spokesperson stressed that since the Tulfo brothers had already been sanctioned by the station, “what else is there for the government to resolve? A preventive suspension suggests that the continued broadcast of the program would constitute a danger to the viewing public. There is no such danger

MTRCB: Tulfo Brothers remarks on TV are a violation of the law

Acting on numerous complaints from the public, corroborated by their own monitoring, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) said it found probable cause to charge T3, a live public affairs program on TV5, for the threats the Tulfo brothers issued against celebrity couple Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barretto in relation with the couple's brawl with their brother, broadcaster Ramon Tulfo, on May 6.

MTRCB Chair Mary Grace Poe-Llamanzares said T3 is in violation of Section 3(c), Presidential Decree 1986 for "airing scenes and utterances that are indecent and contrary to law, or with a dangerous tendency to encourage the commission of violence, or of a wrong or crime" in its May 7 episode.
On the Monday episode of T3, broadcaster Erwin Tulfo said, "Tama ang sinabi ni Tol Raffy.. ako din kung nagkita tayo sa airport ipagdasal mo lang muna at pinapayo ko sayo at sa asawa mo.. huwag ka muna lumabas ng bansa kasi kung nangpang-abot tayo sa NAIA..Tatamaan at tatamaan ka... wala akong pakialam, pati asawa mo tatamaan sa akin. Ipagdasal mo nalang..huwag tayo mag-krus ng landas."

His brother, Ben Tulfo, followed this on with, "Pero sa akin isa lang ang gagawin ko, Raymart. Pakinggan mo ang sasabihin ko sa iyo. Binabangga ko ang mga kriminal, mamamatay tao. Matinong tao ka pero kung gusto mo sa isang malaking warehouse na sarado. Magaantay ang mga ambulansya, last man standing, walang lalabas sa loob. Magsasara tayo ng pinto, titingnan ko ang galing mo. Tandaan mo ito."

Meanwhile, TV5 said in a statement that it does not condone the Tulfos' statements and actions and even promised to subject the Tulfos to disciplinary action.

"News5 assures the public and all parties concerned that the statements made by the Tulfo brothers in its program, T3, last May 7, 2012, were unscripted, spontaneous, and do not in any way reflect the stand nor the policy of the network…" the statement said.

"News5 does not and will never condone such behavior. It was not only uncalled for but also runs counter to the established Code of Ethics that we all strictly adhere to. We are taking necessary actions to deal with this lapse in judgment on the part of the Tulfo brothers and assure the public that we remain committed to objective and impartial journalism."

Erwin Tulfo apologizes for threatening Raymart on TV

Press Conference: Raymart said, "I'm telling the truth"

Contrary to what his opponent, Mon Tulfo said, Raymart Santiago insists it was the broadcaster-newspaper columnist who threw the first punch that led to the brawl at the NAIA 3 (Ninoy Aquno International Airport) carousel area last Sunday, May 6.

“Nagsasabi ako ng totoo,” Raymart told the media at a press conference held on Monday, May 7 at the Red Garlic Restaurant in Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City.

“Siya ang unang nanuntok sa akin. Tinanong ko lang kung ano ang ginagawa niya. Ngumisi siya sa akin. Sinuntok at sinipa niya ako. Nakialam siya sa nangyaring insidente na nagreklamo lang kami sa Cebu Pacific dahil sa bagahe na nawala. Hindi niya muna inalam kung bakit kami nagalit.”

Raymart explained that he and his wife Claudine Barretto got angry because the missing luggage contained medicine their asthmatic child badly needed at that time.

“Kung nagtanong lang siya, wala sigurong ganitong klaseng pangyayari,” Raymart adds.

He relates that the situation worsened after Tulfo took their photos.

“Lumaki lang ito dahil pinagkukunan kami ni Mon Tulfo na hindi ko naman siya nakilala nung time na yon. Tinanong ko siya ng mabuti, 'Sir, ano po ang ginagawa ninyo?' Sinuntok niya ako at sinipa,” Raymart recalls.

But how can he and Claudine prove their innocence when NAIA-3 has no CCTV recording that could show the events that could have led to the fight?  The only video available is a highly-viewed one on YouTube and Facebook which showed Tulfo, not Raymart, getting a beating.

Lawyer’s appeal

The Santiagos’ legal counsel, Alex Avisado Jr., flies to his clients’ defense: “The YouTube video doesn’t do justice to what really happened because bandang huli na ng kaguluhan ang nakita. May nauna pang incidents dito.”

Avisado says he already asked NAIA 3 management for a copy of the CCTV “that will show the truth about what really happened.”

Assuming no CCTV is available, the lawyer is appealing to witnesses who could have videos or photos of what happened.

“Kung nakita niyo ang nangyari, maglakas loob kayong lumabas kung meron kayong cellphone videos para makita ng buong bayan kung sino talaga ang inapi dahil dito kawawa si Claudine. Alam naming malaking risk 'yon sa sarili at pamilya ninyo. Lahat natatakot kay Mr. Mon Tulfo. Pero kung magpapdaig tayo sa takot, hindi lalabas ang katotohanan.”

Avisado further said that their search for a CCTV of what happened is proof that the Santiagos are blameless.

“Saan ka nakakakita na kung sino ang pinapalabas na aggressor ay sila pa ang humihingi ng kopya ng CCTV? Doon pa lang alam ninyo na agad kung sino ang may confidence at lakas ng loob na panindigan kung sino ang nagsasabi ng totoo.Kung sila ang may kasalanan dito,  hindi sila hihingi ng CCTV.”

Raymart is confident the truth and he did the right thing as  protective husband and father.

“Siguro, mapapatawad ko pa siya sa ginawa niyang panununtok at paninipa. Pero sa ginawa niya sa asawa ko at trauma a anak ko, yon ang nagpapainit ng ulo ko.”

Physical and emotional trauma

A visibly shaken Claudine, who sat beside Raymart at the presscon, reports that she suffered from abrasion and hematoma.  Her lawyers advised her not to issue a statement for now since it may aggravate the trauma she is going through.

Even Raymart’s children are strongly affected. The youngest, Santino, four, says Raymart, was very angry.

“Where’s that man? Is he in jail?” Raymart quoted the boy as saying.

Raymart adds that his children are set to see a doctor because of the trauma they are going through.

Avisado relates that he will file a case of child abuse and physical injuries against Tulfo on May 8 or 9.

“Na-experience ng mga bata na sinasaktan ang ina nila,” the lawyer explained.

Tulfo has already filed physical injuries and grave coercion cases against Raymart and Claudine.

Both are claiming the other camp struck the first blow.
Actor Raymart Santiago and columnist Ramon Tulfo swapped charges of physical injuries and grave coercion before the Pasay City police and the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office yesterday over the brawl that occurred on Sunday at the arrival area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

Tulfo Brothers reaction to Raymart & Claudine on TV

Raffy Tulfo, Erwin Tulfo & Ben Tulfo warns Raymart Santiago on T3 Program.

Tulfo Brothers have "threats" & asked for a round two brawl

The threats of the Tulfo brothers, aired on TV5, have reached actor Raymart Santiago.
“Of course, it can be scary,” Santiago admitted to the Inquirer in a phone interview last night. “I’m just a simple person. I don’t go around with bodyguards like Mon Tulfo. At the police precinct, he was surrounded by goons.”
In an earlier TV interview, one of the Tulfo brothers challenged him to a round two of the brawl.
“Why should I fight with them? This is between me and his brother; not them. It’s not right. There’s no reason for us to quarrel,” Santiago said. “We’re not boxers.”
Still, he said he trusts that no harm can befall him.
“I am not scared. God is on our side. I’m not afraid because we are in the right,” he asserted.
He said that he could walk around in public confidently. “We have lots of allies, true friends who are praying for us,” he said. “They know the real me.”
He has advice for the Tulfo brothers: “They should try to get to the bottom of the issue first. They should sit down with their brother and find out the truth.”
In a press conference, Santiago said the YouTube video showing a group of people ganging up on Tulfo only showed the latter part of what happened.
Santiago’s lawyer, Alex Avisado, appealed to people who might have videos or photos of the incident “to come out,” claiming the YouTube video “does not capture the whole story.”
Avisado said the Santiago side was contemplating filing physical injuries charges against Tulfo as well as a case of child abuse for the trauma which he said Santiago’s children suffered

TULFO files cases against Raymart & Claudine et al. "No CCTV video of Claudine-Raymart-Tulfo fight"

MANILA, Philippines - Journalist Ramon Tulfo has filed charges of grave coercion and physical injury against Raymart Santiago, wife Claudine Baretto and company, after getting involved in an altercation at the NAIA Terminal 3 yesterday.
Tulfo, who appeared before the Pasay City Prosecutor's office wearing sunglasses, said he initially didn't want to file a complaint against the Santiagos but changed his mind after alleged further verbal abuse from Claudine.
Tulfo's left and right temple as well as his right jaw are still swollen. He is also complaining of pain in his neck.He filed a case of grave coercion against actor Raymart Santiago after the latter allegedly tried to take his cellphone camera away from him.
Tulfo also filed charges of physical injury against spouses Raymart and Claudine Baretto-Santiago, their companion Eduardo Atilano, and several other John and Jane Does.
He said airport security is also culpable because he sustained further injuries when they physically subdued him.

Who threw the first punch between Inquirer columnist Ramon Tulfo and the group of Raymart Santiago and Claudine Barretto?
That question may have to be answered by eyewitness accounts after the Ninoy Aquino International Airport management said there was no closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of how the fight started Sunday.
NAIA General Manager Angel Honrado said the brawl on Sunday afternoon occurred at the baggage conveyor area, which is not covered by airport CCTV cameras.
"Unfortunately, 'yung video dun sa baggage conveyor is part of the system na kailangan i-operationalize natin. Yung CCTV system namin is working dun sa arrival area pero out pa dun sa conveyor area," he told radio dzMM.
He said the airport management is now conducting its own investigation of the brawl, starting with all on-duty policemen and security guards.
"Alam po ninyo, pinapahanap ko lahat ang duty dun.Tatlo ang airport police, lima ang security guards, both ng mga airport at airlines ang nagtulong-tulong dun. I just have to require our security providers to increase their training," he said.
Tulfo and several of Santiago’s companions got into a fight at the NAIA Terminal 3 after Tulfo started taking pictures of Barretto allegedly berating an airline staff after their luggage was left at Caticlan airport.YouTube video as evidence
Tulfo said he is thankful for whoever uploaded the video, which he said proved that he was beaten up by Santiago’s group. He said he might use the amateur video as his evidence against the couple.
“Nagpapasalamat ako sa kanya kung sino man siya. Tinatanaw ko itong malaking utang na loob sa kanya habang ako’y nabubuhay,’ he said.
The columnist added Santiago’s and Barretto’s behavior that day was far from the roles they had portrayed on screen.
“Yung mga pino-portray ninyo na magandang pagkatao sa harap ng camera, taliwas sa gnagawa niyo sa labas. Minumura niyo yung malilit na tao,” he said.
NAIA to Tulfo: Be nice
The airport GM, meanwhile, defended his men from Tulfo’s allegations that they were “inutile and useless” during the brawl.
"I am not trying to justify yung mga tao ko, baka nagkaroon ng lapse o pagkukulang dun pero siguro maraming instances na siguro dahil sa bugso ng init ng ulo, talagang it's bound to happen,” Honrado said.
He added: “Our people were out there to pacify and make sure that no additional injury will take effect. Will try to make any correction.”
Tulfo earlier said airport security were "inutile and useless" and even helped the Santiago couple during the brawl by holding him down.
"Alam mo diyan ko nakita 'yung pagka-useless, pagiging inutil ng mga pulis, ng mga security guards. May mga pulis doon, may airport pulis doon hindi PNP. Wala silang nagawa nanood lang. Wala silang nagawa," he told ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda.
Tulfo stressed that if only the airport police and security guards did their job, he would not have been mauled.
"Kaya ako nagapi dahil I submitted myself to the authority. Dahil nandoon sila may unipormadong mga kalalakihan na ay matitigil na yung gulo at hindi na ako pagtutulungan, nagkamali ako. I put my guard down," he said.
Honrado, however, chastised Tulfo for insulting airport security.
"I think we have to be on the better stand. Avoid po natin ang masasagwang mga salita para hindi nasasaktan yung ibang tao, lalo na yung hindi kasama sa away," he said.
