Jonas Brothers, J.Lo, The Fray Concert in Manila

MANILA, Philippines -- The last quarter of the year will see five popular international acts stage separate concerts in Manila. Among them are boy band Jonas Brothers and former "American Idol" judge Jennifer Lopez.
Following his first visit to Manila in May for a clothing brand endorsement, Joe Jonas will be joined by the other two thirds of the popular Disney-grown musical act, Kevin and Nick, to his second visit to the country.
The American boy band's Manila concert will see the real-life brothers' reunion as an act after a three-year absence from the music scene. According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the Jonas Brothers will perform on October 19 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
J.Lo in Manila
After expressing her excitement over a possible visit to Manila in May, Latin singer Jennifer Lopez will finally set foot in the Philippines for the first time for a one-night concert.
The Philippine Star reported that the former "Idol" judge, also known as J.Lo, has been confirmed to stage the Manila stop of her "J.Lo Dance Again World Tour" at the SM Mall Of Asia Arena on November 26.
Rock bands, Morrison
Also confirmed to visit Manila in the last quarter of the year are rock bands The Fray, Creed, and English singer-songwriter James Morrison.
Morrison will perform at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on October 9 as part of his world tour titled "The Awakening." He is known for the hits "You Give Me Something" and "Broken Strings."
The Fray will perform live at the same venue on November 10, while Creed will hold a show the night after.
Creed, an American rock band, is known for the hits "My Sacrifice" and "With Arms Wide Open," while The Fray is behind the songs "How to Save a Life" and "You Found Me."
Cinderella, Buzz Lightyear
The Big Dome will also serve as the venue where Disney characters Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will "scout" for new talents among its kiddie audience.
In "Disney's Live! Mickey's Rockin Road Show," children will "[discover] friends like Tigger and the 'Toy Story' cast and Cinderella, and the second part they will come together and perform," according to Kerry Silson, who plays the character of Buzz Lightyear.
Billed as a "fun-filled road trip" that doubles as a talent search, "Rockin Road Show" will run from September 5 to 15 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Final rites for Jesse Robredo

MANILA, Philippines—A man for everyone, that’s how the late Secretary Jesse Robredo was described by Fr. Kulandairaj Ambrose of the Missionaries of the Poor, one of the officiating priests in the recently ended concelebrated funeral Mass late Tuesday morning in Naga City.

“Secretary Robredo has time for everybody. He could take breakfast in Manila, lunch in Cebu and dinner in Naga. He was there for you. He was there for everyone,” Fr. Ambrose said in his homily.

The Jamaican priest said Robredo is a true friend and he had mixed emotions upon learning he was the one to officiate the funeral Mass. “If you feel the ground is shaking, it’s not because there’s an earthquake, it’s because my knees are shaking,” he said.

He enumerated the good deeds the late secretary shown as mayor of Naga.

“In his presence, we felt no worry, he gives hope to everybody,” he said.

In the end, he said Robredo died doing what he loved the most.

Tuesday marks the final day of national mourning for Robredo.

Based on a bulletin from the government official website, the Mass will be followed by the conferment of the Philippine Legion of Honor (posthumous) on Robredo to be followed by the eulogy of the President and the State Funeral proper

“The casket bearing the remains of Secretary Robredo will be escorted from the Basilica Minore de Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia to the Funeraria Imperial. The Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police will render departure and arrival honors,” the bulletin said.

Maroon 5 Live in Manila

MANILA, Philippines—Great music will once again grace Manila grounds as Maroon 5 brings their “Overexposed Tour” with special guest, The Cab on September 18 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Tickets will be available on June 25. Tickets may be purchased online at www.ticketnet.com.ph or call Ticketnet hotline 911-5555 for inquiries.

Expect today’s hottest band composed of Adam Levine on vocals, James Valentines on guitar, Mickey Madden on bass, Matt Flynn on drums, PJ Morton on keyboards,  to knock everybody off their feet with a scorching performance together with The Cab, who recently gave an amazing show here in Manila last March with other great bands in a mini music festival called Smash Project 2012.

With millions of album sold worldwide, numerous chart topping hits, it’s not a surprise that Maroon 5 has now reached international prominence and recognition. Gone were the days where the band was just trying to fill small LA clubs. Now it’s arenas and stadiums at thousands strong. Yes, the band is now a worldwide sensation but has still managed to keep their feet on the ground and acknowledge, with humor, the fact that they are overexposed.

“Overexposed”, the title of Maroon 5’s latest album was an inside joke, a pre-emptive approach to what was inevitably going to be said of the band. With front man Adam Levine’s venture into TV, as a mentor for the hit reality show The Voice, Maroon 5 has reached that stage where their popularity has become increasingly hard to deny.

“It’s like, ‘We get it—we’re overexposed,’” Levine says with a laugh. “We’re just trying to preemptively go where the conversation is headed anyway. We figured we’d get there first.”

Their latest phenomenal hit “Moves Like Jagger”, a song that went down in history as one the most paid downloaded songs, prompted the band to explore the idea of co-writing. The underlying message of their new album title captures the band’s willingness to take a step further in terms of music and took risks.

“I feel like we’ve been standing on the edge of a cliff for a long time,” Levine says. “We’re a band that’s always been close to being full-on pop, but that’s rooted in a lot of other things: rock, soul, funk, the list goes on. Overexposed is the first time we’ve ever completely embraced the idea of making pop music—of making songs for the radio. We just said, ‘Let’s not be afraid to do what we basically are.’”

Maroon 5’s fourth album is the result of that. Levine says that of all the band’s albums, “Overexposed” feels “both most and least like Maroon 5. There are lots of traces of the past, but it also hints at a new idea,” the singer explains. “More than anything I think this record says that it’s always cool to try—that you should always be willing to take a step beyond whatever feels comfortable.”

The album features collaboration with well-known producers—Max Martin (the album’s executive producer), Benny Blanco and Ryan Tedder. Their single off their new album, “Payphone” – the incredibly catchy and sweet as pop song, features rapper Wiz Khalifa for the guest verse. Indeed they are heading over to the “pop” direction with heads held up high.

“I love how ‘Payphone’ seems like a such sweet song until the chorus comes in,” Levine says, referring to the part of that tune where he declares, “All those fairy tales are full of shit / One more fucking love song, I’ll be sick.” “It’s totally subverting the song in this way that makes you lean in and listen,” he says.

The creation of their new album also brought about changes individually for the band members.
“There’s a new focus that’s set into us both personally and as a band,” Valentine said.

“We had such amazing experiences the first 10 years of this group, and I think we spent a lot of time enjoying it, which was great. But now it’s like, ‘Well, what do we do? We make records.’” The guitarist laughs. “Put it this way: In 2007 after the show we were definitely finding out where the party was. Now it’s more like, ‘Hey, let’s go finish that song.’ That’s what’s more exciting to us.”

Whether it’s a new approach to song writing or the band’s headed over to a new direction, there is still one thing that remains true: Maroon 5 continuously creates great music. This fact is undeniable. And with fans awaiting their return, Maroon 5 “Overexposed Tour” would be an affirmation of the fact the people all over will always and continuously support the great music that the band makes.

Great music is wonderful but it would be doubly incredible if it were heard live. Maroon 5 live in Manila happens on September 18 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. This event is presented by Midas Promotions in cooperation with Dayly Entertainment.  Also presented by Head and Shoulders, Sulit.com.ph, Tanduay Ice with co-presenters Dickies and PLDT My Dsl.

Lady Gaga arrives Manila amid protests

MANILA, Philippines—Controversial pop superstar Lady Gaga arrived in Manila on Saturday on board a private jet, which landed on a more secluded area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) amid a series of protests calling on Filipinos to boycott her two-night concert here.
Airport authorities said Lady Gaga arrived at the Naia Terminal 1 around 7:30 p.m. on board a Gulfstream IV business jet.
Unlike her previous visit to Manila when she took a commercial flight, a private jet has been chartered by the show promoters to fly her from Taipei, where she had just performed in concerts as part of her “Born This Way Ball” world tour.
Airport records revealed that the chartered aircraft docked at Remote Parking Bay 20 which is isolated from public view, keeping her away from the media and the public.
From the airport, the American singer-songwriter went straight to Makati Shangri-La hotel where she is billeted for the duration of her concerts scheduled Monday and Tuesday. No interviews were granted as bodyguards led the singer inside the hotel after she stopped briefly at the entrance to sign autographs for screaming fans.
The shows, which will be held at the newly constructed SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, has generated protests and threats from various religious groups including bishops of the Catholic Church due to her provocative image and songs.
‘Blasphemy’
Some 200 Christian youths marched in Manila Saturday morning for the second straight day, chanting “Stop the Lady Gaga concerts.” They held placards urging the pop diva to “respect our faith, stop the blasphemy.”
The protesters were on their way to the Arena until police stopped them near the route approaching the Mall of Asia complex.
The Biblemode Youth Philippines members also plan to hold a vigil starting Sunday near the seaside concert venue. They say they are offended by Lady Gaga’s music, particularly her song “Judas,” which they say mocks Jesus Christ.
On Friday, leaders of various organizations under the United Christian Groups held a press conference and accused Lady Gaga of “symbolizing everything that is corrupt and demonic.”
They called on authorities to stop the concerts.
Catholic leaders chimed in, asking the faithful to boycott the shows, which, they said, would promote godlessness.
Much of their displeasure was focused on Lady Gaga’s song “Judas,” a track from her 2011 album “Born This Way,” whose music video features a stylized Biblical storyline in which she personifies Mary Magdalene caught between her allegiance to Jesus and an attraction to Judas Iscariot.
Authorities have approved the concerts but said they won’t allow lewd acts.

Misconceptions
Renen de Guia, head of Ovation Productions, organizer of the concerts, sought to clarify what he said were misconceptions of people on Lady Gaga and her music.
On Friday, he told the Inquirer that Lady Gaga, just like other artists, thrives on controversy. He recalled the rumors surrounding the 26-year-old singer when he produced her first concert in Manila two years ago: “The talk back then was that she’s a hermaphrodite. Did she deny it? No. She went along with the rumor. Now we all know that it was just rumor. Today she’s thought of as evil who belongs to a satanic cult. Again she’s not denying. We should know better. The controversy is working.”
The promoter pointed out that the “Judas” music video “is very tame, compared to other videos by R&B and hip-hop artists. “If you’re paranoid, everything is evil to you. And why is nobody making a fuss over vampire movies? Why single out Lady Gaga?”
Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in New York, Lady Gaga was raised a Roman Catholic and attended convent schools.
She has been quoted on the Internet service provider MSN Canada, explaining her intentions in writing the controversial song: “‘Judas’ is a metaphor and an analogy about forgiveness and betrayal and things that haunt you in your life, and how I believe that it’s the darkness in your life that ultimately shines and illuminates the greater light that you have upon you.”
‘For adults only’
Her Manila concerts are part of the ongoing “Born This Way Ball” tour, which opened in Seoul. Days before the concert, a group in Korea called Civilians Network criticized it as “too homosexual and pornographic” that could “taint young people.” The state agency Korea Media Rating Board declared it as a for-adults-only show, with the promoter refunding 280 out of the 44,500 tickets sold.
A scheduled performance on June 3 in Jakarta is in limbo after Indonesian police refused to grant organizers a permit, citing warnings from hard-line Islamic groups.
In a statement sent to the media on Friday, De Guia confirmed that the Manila shows “will be staged as scheduled despite isolated calls from certain groups for their cancellation.”
He explained: “While we respect the beliefs and positions of  these organizations on certain fundamental issues concerning morality and decency, we wish to assure the general public that the performances of Lady Gaga will not pose as a threat to their sense of  morality and conduct—especially the youth—as these groups have warned.
Artistic expressions
“We appeal for greater understanding and ask the public to treat the musical and theatrical acts of Lady Gaga as authentic and legitimate forms of artistic expressions which have enjoyed widespread appeal and acceptance among millions worldwide.
“The ‘Born This Way Ball’ concert is no exception, and we are confident it will also be appreciated and accepted by local audiences once it is staged.”

Filipino Youths protest against Lady Gaga concerts

MANILA, Philippines—Christian youths in the Philippines are continuing to protest against Lady Gaga’s upcoming concerts despite organizers’ assurances that her performances will not threaten morality.
Some 200 Christian youths marched in Manila for the second straight day Saturday, chanting “Stop the Lady Gaga concerts.” They held placards urging the pop diva to “respect our faith, stop the blasphemy.”
The Biblemode Youth Philippines members also plan to hold a vigil starting Sunday near the seaside concert venue. They say they are offended by Lady Gaga’s music, particularly her song “Judas,” which they say mocks Jesus Christ.
Authorities have approved the concerts, which are set for Monday and Tuesday, but say they won’t allow lewd acts.
Sold-out crowds and angry protests have followed Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” Asian tour.
Mind you guys that Lady Gaga's song "Born this way" has made Maria Aragon so popular on Youtube.
