Jessica Sanchez and American Idol Top 10 in Philippines for Asian Concert Tour

“There are lots of casinos, and pretty girls,” quipped Heejun Han, one of the Top 10 finalists of “American Idol” Season 11, when asked of his first impressions upon landing on Philippine soil.
Heejun, 23, joined the rest of the youthful, bubbly “Idols” at a press conference Tuesday at the Manila Hotel for their concert on Friday, at Smart Araneta Coliseum. The show is the last and only Asian date of the group’s 45-city tour of the United States.
In 2010, the “American Idol” live tour—which featured grand winner Scott McCreery and 10 others, including 11th-placer Filipino-American Thia Megia—debuted in Manila for two nights, also at the Big Dome.
Friday’s concert is made more significant by the presence of another Filipino-American, Jessica Sanchez, the 2012 “Idol” runner-up who almost snagged the title from her main rival, Phillip Phillips.
Born and raised in the United States to a Filipino mother and a Mexican-American father, Jessica—easily the most popular among the Idols due to her local lineage and jaw-dropping vocal power—said she would be staying behind for about a week after the concert.
“I’ll be shooting some product endorsements,” she said, but expressed regret that she might not be able to visit her mom’s hometown in Bataan province.
She held back when the Philippine Daily Inquirer asked whether she would be doing a commercial for leading food chain Jollibee, explaining that she couldn’t reveal anything yet, except for clothing brand Bench which announced it recently on social networking sites Twitter and Facebook.
Jessica likewise did not confirm whether she was indeed being considered to play the lead role of Kim in the film version of the award-winning stage musical “Miss Saigon,” although she said: “I would love to try (auditioning).”
Just turned 17
Regarding reports that she was set to appear in the popular musical-comedy-drama TV series “Glee,” Jessica replied: “Nothing’s confirmed … But it’s in the works.”
The petite powerhouse singer, who just turned 17 last month, showed none of the trappings of fame that came with her worldwide exposure on “Idol.”
Dressed in a simple, cut-off denim shirt and black shorts, the only noticeable pop-star item in her wardrobe was her pair of silver spikes-studded high-heeled shoes.
She pointed out that she ate more Filipino food than Mexican fare at home in San Diego, California. Asked what her favorite Pinoy dish is, she struggled with her Tagalog: “Sinigang na … the one with pork.”
She admitted that she couldn’t learn the Filipino language because it was not spoken at home, “although my grandpa does, but he speaks so fast.”
Life-changing status

If there was any instance during the “Idol” competition that made her realize that joining it had changed her life, Jessica paused for a moment before saying: “The gruelling moments … when we were all pushing to do something that we really wanted.”
Asked what would they be doing if they didn’t get into the show, each of the “Idols” gave different answers—except for Jessica, who said, “This is what I want to do for the rest of my life. It’s been in my head since I was 10.”
The rest of the “Idols” affirmed the life-changing status they felt during and after the show.
“(After) being eliminated, we appeared on talk shows and people started noticing,” said sixth placer Elise Testone. A veteran of the South Carolina music scene, Elise, 29, is a vocal coach aside from being a talented musician who can play the piano, guitar, drums, cello and tambourine.
“Meeting the fans while on tour was definitely memorable,” admitted 10th placer Erika Van Pelt, a native of South Kingstown, Rhode Island. Apparently the most adventurous fashion-wise, Erika, 26, said she dyed her hair red because she was “feeling fiery” en route to the Philippines.
‘Balut’
“Idol” title holder Phillip Phillips—who revealed that his debut solo album is due for release in December—confessed that “everything still isn’t real for me. I still get nervous when performing.”
But the 21-year-old singer-songwriter from Leesburg, Georgia, who stood out in the competition for his ability to arrange his material, added that “the tour has made me feel at home in the cities that we visit. It’s been a long year but a lot of fun.”
Eighth placer DeAndre Brackensick, 17, said he “can’t wait to eat balut.” Born in San Jose, California, to a European-American father and an African-American mother, DeAndre did not join the group interviews because he was not feeling well, organizers said. He is currently the apple of Jessica’s eyes.
Seventh placer Colton Dixon, 20, appreciated the fact that he has collaborated on some songs with Jason Wade of the Los Angeles rock band Lifehouse. He said he’s looking forward to the eventual release of the songs.
Of the 10 Idols, it was third placer and Louisiana native Joshua Ledet who greeted the Philippine media with “Mabuhay!” He added that he learned another Filipino word, but couldn’t remember it at the moment.
New ‘Idol’ judges
It remains to be seen whether this batch of Idols would pull in a capacity crowd at the Big Dome concert on Friday.
Although “Idol” has been highly rated since it debuted on television in 2002, audiences are now only about half the more than 30 million who watched regularly in the show’s 2005 and 2006 heyday.
The last season finale in May drew a record low of 21.5 million viewers and “Idol” lost its prestige as the most-watched program on US TV to “Sunday Night Football.”
Controversial rapper Nicki Minaj and country singer Keith Urban joined a new set of judges that includes Mariah Carey (with Randy Jackson retained) as the show seeks to boost its star power and recapture sliding audiences in a crowded TV talent competition field.
The show’s 12th season will air in January 2013.

Jessica Sanchez will sing for Obama at Democratic Convention

Jessica Sanchez will sing for US President Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina on Wednesday (Thursday, Manila time), the “American Idol” Season 11 runner-up confirmed on her Twitter account.
“I might not be old enough to vote, but I’m so honored and excited to perform at @Barack Obama’s big party in Charlotte next week #DNC2012,” Jessica, who turned 17 last month, tweeted over the weekend.
The Filipino-Mexican-American from Chula Vista, California will perform at the Time Warner Cable Arena on the second night of the convention, where Obama is expected to be nominated as the Democratic Party’s Presidential bet in the US elections in November.
Jessica will perform on the same night as saxophonist Branford Marsalis and DJ Cassidy.
The list of performers in the three-day convention include The Foo Fighters, Mary J. Blige, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Marc Anthony.
Jessica is at the tailend of the “American Idol” tour, which kicked off in Detroit in July 6 and will conclude in Manila on September 21.
Her appearance at the Democratic convention is sandwiched between tour dates in Syracuse, New York (September 4) and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania (September 6).

Jessica Sanchez contract with Bench clothing is said to be six digits

Jessica Sanchez’s endorsement contract with Philippine clothing brand Bench is said to be worth at least six figures in US dollars.

“We are thrilled to welcome the voice that has won the hearts of many. Truly proud to have Jessica Sanchez (@JSanchezAI11) part of the #Benchsetter family,” said Bench on its Twitter account last week.

This is the first Philippine product endorsement for the Fil-Am singing sensation after her first runner-up finish in “American Idol” this year. Jollibee is also said to have formally offered her an endorsement deal.

Sanchez, who turns 17 on Saturday, and Korean actor Lee Min-ho are the latest international celebrities to sign up with Bench. The list includes Bruno Mars, David Archuleta, Michael Trevino, Lucy Hale, Joe Jonas, and Super Junior members Choi Siwon and Lee Donghae.

‘Crazy stuff’

On Sunday, Sanchez chatted with her Filipino fans via Skype video at a promotional event held in SM Megamall.

Asked about her coming debut album, Sanchez said it would have “crazy stuff”  that would reveal both her fun and serious sides. (The album will be released in October on Interscope Records.)

Broadway.com said Sanchez was “in talks” to play the lead role in the film adaptation of the award-winning stage musical “Miss Saigon,” to be directed by Lee Daniels. Other online news sites reported that she was “in negotiations” to join the fourth season of the TV series “Glee.”

These will all have to wait until the end of this year’s “American Idols Live!” tour. The concert series—which features the top 10 finalists and has 45 dates in North America—winds up Sept. 21 at Smart Araneta Coliseum. The visit to the Philippines, where her mother was born, is her biggest goal at the moment, Sanchez said during Sunday’s video chat.

An online post of the show’s repertoire indicates that Sanchez has seven production numbers and three solo spots. “Expect a lot of fun and dancing,” she told her Filipino fans.

Phillip Phillips beats Jessica Sanchez in the American Idol Finale

Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez: Their journeys may have started in the same way, but their stories ended very differently.

The finale kicked off with the Top 13 American Idol finalists performing Bruno Mars' "Runaway Baby," complete with break dancers. Then, Phillip took the stage to sing "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" and "Bad Moon Rising" with CCR's John Fogerty.

After a look back at some fun Idol moments from the season (including several involving Steven Tyler's rear end), Fantasia joined Joshua ("Mantasia") for a rollicking performance of Elton John's classic, "Take Me to the Pilot."

Idol's resident mentor, Jimmy Iovine, confessed in a video "love letter" to Jennifer Lopez that he often confused her name with Jessica's (he also had trouble with "Joshica").

Then performances kept on coming. The top female finalists joined Chaka Khan for a medley of her hits before Rihanna took the stage for a super sexy performance of her latest hit, "Where Have You Been?" Then country queens Skylar Laine and Reba paired up to perform "Turn on the Radio."

Next, Steven Tyler gave us a peek inside his "colorful" world, which involves a sloth, Playboy bunnies, and, yes, his organ – the one he used to write “Dream On.” Then, Jessica Sanchez took the stage to reprise her show-stopping version of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You."

There were more performances yet to come. The top male finalists joined Neil Diamond to sing a medley of his hits, and in a hilarious video moment, the male and female finalists proved to Randy that they could indeed sing the phone book!

Up next: Idol's own Jennifer Lopez took the stage for a sexy performance of "Goin' In" and "Follow the Leader." (The costumes — and the dance moves — provided plenty of eye candy!).

Then came the shocker: Season 5 finalist Ace Young proposed to Season 3 runner-up Diana DeGarmo, live on the Idol stage. She said yes!

Back to the performances. Hollie Cavanagh sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" with Idol winner Jordin Sparks, and the male finalists paid tribute to the Bee Gees.

Another huge moment: Original "Dreamgirl" Jennifer Holiday joined Jessica Sanchez for a bring-the-house-down performance of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going."

And it kept getting better: Aerosmith (including Idol's own Steven Tyler, of course) gave Idol fans a mini-rock concert, performing their new single "Legendary Child" and their classic hit, "Walk This Way."

Finally, Jessica and Phillip performed a duet of the 1982 hit, "Up Where We Belong," and then it was time for the official results.

Ryan dimmed the lights . . . after a staggering 132 million votes were counted, setting a new world record, our new American Idol is Phillip Phillips!

Last year's Idol, Scotty McCreery, presented Phillip with his official trophy, and Ryan handed Phillip his guitar to sing his winning song, "Home." However, Phillip became too emotional to finish the song — after the confetti fell, he walked off the stage to hug his family. That wraps up Season 11 of American Idol. Congratulations, Phillip!

Filipino Celebrities has some words about Jessica Sanchez

Filipino celebrities are united in their support for Filipino-Mexican-American Jessica Sanchez, who will compete in the grand finale of the talent search “American Idol,” to be held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on May 22 and 23 (May 23 and 24 in Manila).
Before the big showdown between Jessica and guitar-strumming heartthrob Phillip Phillips, Filipino celebrities made known their unequivocal love for the pint-sized diva with the powerhouse voice.
Celeste Legaspi
Singer
First time I saw her perform, I was immediately impressed. She has quite a voice—a wide range with higher registers that she uses in a pure way and then [becomes] strong [when she’s] growling. She also dives to the low registers with ease, control and great musicality … But the best thing about her is that she has an understanding of the lyric. For a 16-year-old, that is truly a gift.
Jon Santos
Stand-up comic
Great songs sound even greater when sung with a Filipina heart. Aside from being a Vilmanian, I’m also a Jessican.
Sharon Cuneta

SHARON Cuneta MARIANNE BERMUDEZ

Singer-actress
I’m so happy and excited! She makes me prouder to be Pinoy. I am praying that she wins.

Jessica is a real blessing. She was born to be a star.
Lea Salonga
Singer-actress
This is the farthest that an American of Asian descent has gone in “American Idol.” This is testament to her hard work and talent, the support of her family, and the unstoppable fans that have voted for her week after week. Whatever the outcome, she is a star and will have a wonderful future in the music industry.
Yam Laranas
Filmmaker
I am proud that she is not “owned” by warring networks and that she unites Filipino fans.

She’s the pride of Filipinos. She brings positive news to our people and country. Mabuhay ka, Jessica!
Jose Javier Reyes
Filmmaker
I am extremely excited and overwhelmed for someone with Filipino blood to get her share of the international spotlight. I hope her journey will inspire Filipino artists of all callings to realize that the stage is boundless … Consider Lea Salonga, Arnel Pineda, Charice, Monique Lhuillier, Oliver Tolentino, Josie Natori, Daniel Romualdez, Kenneth Cobonpue and the others who came before them. The sky must be the limit; genuine talent knows no borders!
Leah Navarro
Singer
I’m very happy for her. Although not as protracted as AI, I’ve experienced competition and it’s tough going. Break a leg, Jessica!
Moy Ortiz
Singer
I am over the moon that she made it to the very final round. I believe that she truly deserves the title, considering her musical capabilities, marketability to a wider international audience, her very young age and her versatility. A win for Jessica is a gargantuan boost to our country’s morale.
Eugene Domingo
Comedienne
We are having mixed emotions as a music icon goes to heaven and here’s an up-and-coming one shining bright! A wild, crazy thought: Can she become as big as Donna Summer? The best is yet to come for Jessica. World, get ready for Jessica!
Ryan Cayabyab
Composer
Bring out the best bottles of wine and raise our glasses and toast Jessica. She was already a winner in my book, even before she made it to the Top 12. Her voice quality is extraordinary. At her young age, she has the polish and the drama and the command of her voice. She is mainstream pop and her voice will register well in recording. Listeners will definitely not get tired of her voice. It’ll be just a big bonus if she wins.
Madonna Decena
Singer
I’m very excited for her. It feels great to hear people from all over the world admiring her vocal prowess. I watched her compete on “America’s Got Talent” when she was a kid, and as early as then I already knew she was special. I always post on my Twitter, Facebook and Myspace page, encouraging people to vote for her. She will make history if she wins. But win or lose, we will always be proud of her.
Gary Valenciano
Singer
Her triumph will do more for the Philippines than she realizes. For someone her age, she already has an exceptional way of interpreting another artist’s song as if it was her own. As good as she is now, the best is yet to come.
Tessie Tomas
Actress
It’s wonderful! I started watching the show regularly because of her. Filipino talent is truly world-class.
Willie Nepomuceno
Stand-up comic
She’s full of sex appeal. She’s a fine dresser who carries herself, in her super high-heels, well. Still, you can see that her deportment is very Filipina, especially whenever she’s critiqued by the judges. What humility! I hope her X factor will work in her favor. May her soulful voice win the hearts of America without prejudice to the color of her skin.

American Idol Finale on May 23: Jessica needs your vote!

NEW YORK—And then there were two.
Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips are left to battle for the “American Idol” season 11 crown on next week’s finale after Joshua Ledet, who brought the “American Idol” judges to their feet many times over, couldn’t win over fans and was sent home from the top-rated TV talent show on Friday.
Sanchez has impressed the judges from the beginning of the current season with her technical mastery of music, despite being the youngest contestant at 16. The other night, the judges cheered the Filipino-Mexican when she sang Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” leading Steven Tyler, the rock band’s lead singer, to say “you just took a great song and made it greater.”
Singer-songwriter Phillips has won plaudits for bringing his own distinctive style of guitar-playing music to other artists’ songs. Mentor Jimmy Iovine and judge Randy Jackson agreed that Phillips’ performance song “We’ve Got Tonight” was his best performance to date.
Ledet was gracious in defeat. He closed the singing contest on Thursday with his rendition of “It’s a Man’s World,” replicating one of his most popular performances of the season.
Friday’s results show included performances from two artists with new albums out this week—Lisa Marie Presley and “Idol” season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert. Presley sang “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet,” off her album “Storm and Grace” and Lambert did “Never Close Our Eyes” from his sophomore album “Trespassing.”
Audience voting was based on Wednesday’s episode that included three performance rounds of contestants singing songs chosen by the judges, songs of their own picking and a tune chosen by Iovine.
Palace support
Hours after Sanchez reached the “Idol” finals on Friday, MalacaƱang appealed to Filipinos in the United States to vote for the Philippine bet.
“Please show your support in any way possible for Jessica Sanchez. This is the last stretch and we know that when Filipinos gather and put their minds into it, it will happen,” said deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte during Friday’s news briefing.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement that Sanchez “inspires us to pursue excellence in everything we do—no matter how big or small the stage may be.”
From Orani, Samal
The frenzy surrounding Sanchez is spreading to the towns of Orani and Samal in Bataan province—where her mother Editha Bugay and maternal relatives hail—as residents hope and pray that her “Idol” journey ends in triumph.
“Our support here is solid. Everybody loves her,” said Manny Morales, 32, a tricycle driver in Orani town.
Morales said a tarpaulin is displayed in front of the town plaza showing their support for Sanchez. A lot of people have also come looking for the house of her grandparents there since she became an “Idol” finalist.
“She has really become well known, even if she hasn’t been here,” he added.
The house of Sanchez’s grandparents in Barangay Apollo in Orani has become a local landmark as Sanchez advanced to the finals.
Orani residents interviewed by the Inquirer said even before Sanchez joined the popular singing competition, the Bugay family was already known in the town. Morales said one of Sanchez’s relatives, Rene Bugay, is a longtime councilor and politician in the town.
Morales said they were hoping Sanchez would visit Bataan after her “Idol” stint.
Orani Mayor Benjamin Serrano Jr. said he had been asking residents of Bataan, who have relatives in the United States, to urge them to support Sanchez and vote for her to become this year’s “American Idol.”
In a text message from the United States, Dinalupihan Mayor Joel Payumo, president of the Bataan Mayors’ League, said the Filipino community in the United States is behind Sanchez all the way.
Payumo’s brother, Jojo, a member of the provincial board, said the provincial government filed a resolution in support of Sanchez three weeks ago.
Free ‘Idol’ viewing
In this town, the local government had prepared a free public viewing of “Idol” through Cignal, a cable TV provider, on Thursday and Friday.
On Thursday night, almost 1,000 Samal residents flocked to the town plaza to watch her perform.
Samal Mayor Generosa dela Fuente said Sanchez had become an inspiration to the youth in their town.
“Even though Samal is relatively smaller and poorer than the other towns in Bataan, we are slowly becoming well known because of Jessica,” she said.
Dela Fuente said she had organized little gatherings to watch Sanchez’s performances.
“In the beginning, we only had a small projector that we used to show her performances in the plaza. But now, we have support given to us by Cignal so that a lot more people can watch her,” she said.
Sanchez’s great, great grandfather was a former Samal councilor and a musician. Her grandfather, Eddie, is a retired US Navy personnel.
“They bought a house in Orani; that’s where they live now. But their ancestral home is here,” Dela Fuente said.
Mass for Sanchez
Fr. Paul Bugay, head of the finance ministry of the San Pablo diocese in Laguna, has been closely following the show and is rooting for his second cousin Sanchez.
A Catholic priest in Laguna, who traces his roots to Samal, Bataan, Bugay has offered prayers and Holy Masses for her to win.
Bugay said his father and the grandfather of Sanchez are cousins.
Since Sanchez became one of the “Idol” contenders, he said the Bugay clan in the United States as well as relatives living in Germany, United Kingdom and Australia had been in close contact with each other through the social networking site Facebook.
He said all the Bugays scattered throughout the world are now unanimous in their campaign to vote for Sanchez.
“They have been encouraging and appealing to fellow Filipinos to vote for her through phone or the Internet,” he said.
The finale will consist of a two-hour performance episode on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila), followed by a results episode on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila), with guest performers Rihanna, Jason Derulo, Aerosmith and the “Idol” season 11 Top 10.
The face-off between Sanchez and Phillips will be aired in the Philippines via satellite on ETC on May 23 at 6 p.m. The season’s grand finale will be broadcast live on May 24 at 8 a.m., with replays at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. also on ETC.

Jessica Sanchez & Phillip Phillips in the Final 2

MANILA, Philippines—It’s official: Jessica Sanchez will be on the finals of “American Idol Season Eleven.”
“The first person to compete in the ‘Americal Idol Season 11 Finale’ is… Jessica Sanchez!” Ryan Seacrest, Idol host announced early Friday (Manila time).
It was announced shortly that 21-year old Phillip Phillips will be competing against Sanchez in the finals.
Joshua Ledet was eliminated due to the low number of votes.
Music producer Jimmy Lovine, the mentor for the competitors throughout the series, heaped praises for Sanchez in his review just before the results were announced saying “she’s got it,” and that she could sing on the Grammy Awards.
The results were announced Thursday night (Friday Manila time) a day after the nationwide vote following performance night where Sanchez sang Mariah Carey’s “My All”, Aerosmith’s “I Dont Want To Miss A Thing”, and The Jackson 5′s “I’ll Be There.”
Sanchez earned the nods of the judges for almost all songs except for “Idol” Judge Randy Jackson’s review that Sanchez’s third performance lacked the “moment-moment.”
Sanchez is a 16-year old American of Filipino and Mexican descent.
The farthest a Filipino has ever gone into the “American Idol” finals was third place, when Jasmine Trias was eliminated from the Top Three during its third season.
Trias is the daughter of Filipino immigrants in Hawaii.
The show’s finale will be held on May 23 where the new “American Idol” will be crowned.

Jessica Sanchez in now no. 2 on American Idol rankings

MANILA, Philippines – Despite being almost sent home by America last Thursday, a popular U.S. magazine still ranked Filipino-Mexican-American contestant Jessica Sanchez as one of the best contestants on “American Idol” this season based on their latest performances.

In its Top 7 Power Rankings Revisited posted in its website, Entertainment Weekly placed Sanchez at No. 2, just one step below her spot last week.
“Save or no save, her talent level is undeniable,” the magazine said.
Last week, Sanchez chose the little-known song "Stuttering" as part of the show's Songs from This Decade theme.
Judge Randy Jackson said Sanchez is setting the bar really high for the Top 7 contestants. Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler was also all praises for the young Mexipino and resident mentor Jimmy Iovine said Sanchez has a voice that "can move anybody."
Meanwhile, landing at the No. 1 position is Colton Dixon, who was last week’s No. 2.
Joshua Ledet and Skylar Laine both kept their places at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.
Elise Testone, on the other hand, hiked one step to No. 5 while Phillip Phillips slid to No. 6. Hollie Cavanagh remained at the last spot.
For this week, the Top 7 will perform two songs each with the theme “Then and Now” – one is a Billboard No. 1 hit from 2000 to 2012 and the other a “soul” song from the previous decade.
According to Entertainment Weekly, this should be a chance for Sanchez to make a comeback as the theme seems to be tailored especially for her.
“This week's ‘then and now' theme seems tailor-made for a Jessica comeback. Expect to hear Etta James' 'I'd Rather Go Blind,' which she already covered masterfully on YouTube,” the article said

Jessica Sanchez, Phillip Phillips and Joshua Ledet left on American Idol

LOS ANGELES—It’s going to be a race to the finish for Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet and Phillip Phillips—the last three standing on “American Idol” season 11—after Hollie Cavanagh was sent packing in the reality singing competition’s elimination night on Thursday (Friday in Manila).
Philippine bet Sanchez, who got her fourth standing ovation this week, thanked her followers on the social networking site Twitter, saying it’s an honor to land on the Top 3. “Just hit 300k followers :) Love you,” posted the 16-year-old high school student from San Diego, California, with Mexican and Filipino heritage.
Sanchez’s father Gilbert is a Mexican-American originally from Texas while her mother Editha Bugay is a Filipino who hails from Samal, Bataan province.
Sanchez got no less than US Ambassador Harry Thomas cheering with Filipino-Americans after she earned a slot in the final three and a ticket to homecoming week, during which she will return to her hometown in Chula Vista, San Diego.
Big fan
“I hope she wins,” said Thomas, who met with Fil-Ams at an evening meet-and-greet event hosted by the US Pinoys for Good Governance at Carla’s CafĆ© inside CBS Studio in Studio City, California.
Should Sanchez fail to make it to the top, Thomas said she is still poised to have a stellar career. “Jessica is a winner no matter what,” he said.
Sanchez is the second contestant of Filipino descent to get elevated to the Top 3 of “Idol.” Filipino-American Jasmine Trias finished third on the competition’s third season.
The Fil-Am artists who performed at the community event had high hopes for Sanchez.
Multiawarded jazz singer Mon David, who won the 2006 London International Jazz Vocal Competition, said that as a performer, he was amazed by Sanchez’s voice range, “the emotion, the passion and the way she interprets the songs.”
“Jessica, we have faith in your wonderful talent,” said David. “We’re proud of you. We pray for your success.”
Another jazz singer, Charmaine Clamor, said that while the likes of Lea Salonga, Charice and Arnel Pineda have already brought the spotlight on the Filipino talent, “Sanchez will give us even more visibility internationally.”
“I hope Sanchez takes it all the way,” said musician Abe Lagrimas. “She is proof that Filipinos are the most talented people out there.”
Community leader Lydia Solis said that Fil-Ams should continue the campaign to get more votes for Sanchez, noting that she voted two hours, using speed dial on two phones.
Celebrities celebrate
On Twitter, celebrity followers of Sanchez celebrated her victory:
“Thank You, oh merciful God 4 making sweet Jessica ‘safe,’” wrote international singer Jennifer Holliday.
“So happy for @JSanchezAI11 on @AmericanIdol. Still rooting for her! Hope everyone keeps voting,” posted Fil-Am “Idol” alumna Jasmine Trias.
“Jessica Sanchez made it to the top 3 of American Idol! Yay! Let’s go, Jess,” said actress Maxene Magalona.
From radio DJ Andi Manzano @andimanzano “Whoohooo! @JSanchezAI11 made it in the TOP 3 :) No more Hollie!”
Prophetic choice
On Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) Sanchez received a standing ovation from “Idol” judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez for her rendition of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” a torch song from the Broadway musical “Dreamgirls.”
Cavanagh, 18, was sent home after singing “I Can’t Make You Love Me”—a song choice that proved prophetic. Ledet wept as a composed Cavanagh closed out the results night show by performing Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb.”
Almost 70 million votes were cast to determine yesterday’s outcome. Audience voting was based on performances night, during which contestants sang songs by artists from California, followed by songs they wished they had written.
Cavanagh first belted out “Faithfully” by rock band Journey, and the show’s judges marveled that she was hitting her stride. The judges, however, were less enthusiastic about her second selection, Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” which judge Randy Jackson called “the wrong choice at the wrong time.”
Most watched reality show
On elimination night, Lopez rose from the judges’ seat to perform her new song “Dance Again.” Season 7 winner David Cook also stopped by to serenade audiences with his “The Last Song I’ll Write for You.”
“Idol,” which first aired on Fox in 2002, has launched the careers of singers Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert and Jennifer Hudson, among many others. Now in its 11th season, the show continues to be the most watched reality show in America.
