MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – Smart-Gilas Pilipinas II launched a strong fourth quarter fight against Japan for a come-from-behind 88-84 win in the 2012 Jones Cup in Taipei on Wednesday.
Marcus Douthit finished with 26 points, helping the nationals to their fourth straight win.
He added 13 rebounds and 2 blocks on top of his scoring spree for an all-around performance.
“We’re hoping to put together a solid 40-minute game but it didn’t happen as we had a bad second quarter,” said team coach Chot Reyes in The Philippine Star.
“We just kept reaching to the players for them to stick to each other and stick to what we wanted to do. In the end, we caught a big break to win.”
The Japanese squad limited the Filipinos to just 10 points in the second quarter, where the former led by as much as 13 before taking a 47-36 halftime advantage.
Gilas completed a 16-2 run in the final period to seize the lead 86-81 with 33.3 seconds left in the game.
Jeffrei Chan scored 14 points for Gilas, while Gabe Norwood added 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
LA Tenorio also came up with big numbers, dishing out 13 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds.
Gilas is now tied with Iran at the top of the Jones Cup standings.
The Philippine squad has defeated South Korea, Chinese Taipei B and Jordan.
