MANILA, Philippines – Despite being almost sent home by America last Thursday, a popular U.S. magazine still ranked Filipino-Mexican-American contestant Jessica Sanchez as one of the best contestants on “American Idol” this season based on their latest performances.
Judge Randy Jackson said Sanchez is setting the bar really high for the Top 7 contestants. Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler was also all praises for the young Mexipino and resident mentor Jimmy Iovine said Sanchez has a voice that "can move anybody."
Meanwhile, landing at the No. 1 position is Colton Dixon, who was last week’s No. 2.
Joshua Ledet and Skylar Laine both kept their places at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.
Elise Testone, on the other hand, hiked one step to No. 5 while Phillip Phillips slid to No. 6. Hollie Cavanagh remained at the last spot.
For this week, the Top 7 will perform two songs each with the theme “Then and Now” – one is a Billboard No. 1 hit from 2000 to 2012 and the other a “soul” song from the previous decade.
According to Entertainment Weekly, this should be a chance for Sanchez to make a comeback as the theme seems to be tailored especially for her.
“This week's ‘then and now' theme seems tailor-made for a Jessica comeback. Expect to hear Etta James' 'I'd Rather Go Blind,' which she already covered masterfully on YouTube,” the article said
In its Top 7 Power Rankings Revisited posted in its website, Entertainment Weekly placed Sanchez at No. 2, just one step below her spot last week.
“Save or no save, her talent level is undeniable,” the magazine said.
Last week, Sanchez chose the little-known song "Stuttering" as part of the show's Songs from This Decade theme.
